Woven Carpet Construction
Stair Runner or Roll Runner materials are primarily manufactured through a weaving process. Runners are woven on Wilton, Axminster or Jacquard looms. (relatively few runner products are hand-tufted) Weaving creates a stronger material than more typical, mainstream carpet products which are tufted.
Pile yarns in a woven material are mechanically bound through the weaving process, adding strength. Pile yarns in a tufted material rely on adhesive and backing material for tuft bind. Woven material will not have an added backing simply because it does not need backing for the integrity of the material. Tufted material relies on the added backing attached using adhesive – without the backing or if the adhesive fails – tufted material has no strength, delaminates from its backing.
